River Gauge Network

The details of the all the sites for the purpose of Hydro-meteorological observations and flood forecasting activities on the various rivers under Middle Ganga Division - 1 is given below. All the stations including base stations and forecasting stations are connected with G.T.S. Bench Mark. The details of all the sites are given at Annexure -1

River Kali

PANCHESWAR

This is the upper most gauge site on the right bank of the river Sharda. The river Sharda is known as Kali River in the upper reaches. Pancheswar site is located near the Indo- Nepal Border and the approach to this site becomes very difficult during the rainy season on account of the hill terrain and frequent block- aides due to landslides. The catchments area of river Kali up to Pancheshwar according to Irrigation Department, Uttar Pradesh is 12293 Sq. km.

River Sharda

a) BANBASA

The site is situated on the right bank of Sharda down- stream of Banbasa headwork in the district Champawat, Uttarakhand. The site is well connected by road and rail. The catchment area of river Sharda up to Banbasa is 15820 sq. km. The gauge data of the site is communicated to the divisional office through CWC’s own wireless network.

b) Paliakalan

The site is situated down- stream of Banbassa on the left bank of river Sarda. The location of site is 8 km. from Paliaklan town. The transmission of data is through the CWC’s wireless network. The catchment area of river Sharda up to Paliaklan is 17,676 sq. km.

c) Shardanagar

The site is situated at the right bank of the river Sharda and down- stream of the Sharda barrage in the district of LakhimpurKheri, Uttar Pradesh. The site has its own CWC’s Wireless network. The gauge data of the site is used as base data for formulation of forecast at Elginbridge. The catchment area of river Sharda up to Shardanagar is 18,553 sq. km.

River Ghaghra

a) B.K GHAT(KATERNIAGHAT)

The site is located close to the indo-Nepai Border in Bahraich district and is the upper most sites on the river Ghaghra. The gauge data of B.K. Ghat (Katerniaghat) site is used as base data for formulation of forecast at Elginbridge, The site has its own CWC’s Wireless network for the transmission of data to divisional office and other places. The catchment area of river Ghaghra up to B.K.Ghat (Katerniaghat) is 43,804 sq. km.

b) ELGINBRIDGE

The site is situated on the left bank of the river Ghaghra in district Barabanki approximately 140 km. down-stream of B.K. Ghat (Katerniaghat). The site is just down-stream of the confluence of river Ghaghra and Sharda near the Bridge on Lucknow-Gonda section of N-E Railway. The site is well connected by road and Rail. This is the first fiood forecasting station on river Ghaghra. The gauge data of the site is used as base data for formulation of forecast at Ayodhya. The site has its own CWC’s Wireless network for the transmission of data to divisional office and other places. The catchment area for river Ghaghra up to Elginbridge is 74713 sq. km.

c) AYODHYA

The site is situated on the right bank of the river Ghaghra at Ayodhya in Faizabad district about 0,5 kms, down-stream of Road bridge connecting Faizabad with Basti. The river distance between Elginbridge and Ayodhya site is approximately 100 kms. The catchment area of river Ghaghra up to Ayodhya is 80,889 sq. kms. This is the second forecasting station on Ghaghra for which flood forecasts are issued. The gauge data of the site is used as base data for formulation of forecast at Turtipar. The site has its own CWC’s Wireless network for the transmission of data to divisional office and other places.

d) TURTIPAR

The site is situated on the right bank of river Ghaghra in district Ballia about 0.5 km down-stream of Turtipar Railway Bridge In Belthera Road Tehsil of Ballia district. The Rapti River joins the river Ghaghra about 18 km. up-stream of this site. This is the last flood forecasting station on river Ghaghra. The site has its own CWC’s Wireless network for the transmission of data to divisional office and other places. The catchment area of river Ghaghra up to Turtipar is 1,13,088 sq, kms.

Rapti River

a) KAKARDHARI

The site is situated in Nanpara Tehsii of Bahraich district near the Indo- Nepal Border on the right bank of river Rapti. The gauge data of this site is utilized as a base data for formulation of flood forecast for the river Rapti at Balrampur, The site has its own CWC’s Wireless network for the transmission of data to divisional office and other places. The catchment area of river Rapti up to Kakardhari Is 5,926 sq. km.

b) BHINGA

The site is situated in district Shravasti very near to Indo-Nepal Border on the right bank of river Rapti. This site is operating since 1974. The catchment area of river Rapti up to Bhinga is 6,151 sq. km.

c) BALRAMPUR

This is first forecasting site on the river Rapti in Balrampur district. The gauge data of Kakardhari is utilized as base data for formulation of forecast for Balrampur. The gauge data of the site is used as base data for formulation of forecast at Bansi. The site is near the road bridge on Bairampur-Tulsipur Road on the right bank of river Rapti. The catchment area of river Rapti up to Balrampur is 8,219 sq. km. This site is operating since 1974.

d) BANSI

The site is situated about 1.5 km down-stream of the road bridge on Bansi- Naugarh road on the left bank of river Rapti. This is the second forecasting station on Rapti for which flood forecasts are issued. The gauge data of Balrampur is utilized as base data for formulation of forecast for Bansi. The gauge data of the site is used as base data for formulation of forecast at Birdghat. The site has its own CWC’s Wireless network for the transmission of data to divisional office and other places. The catchment area of the River Rapti up to Bansi is 9,575 sq. km. e) REGAULI

This site is located near village Regauli on left bank of the river Rapti down-stream of the confluence of river Kunhra. The catchment area of river Rapti up to Regauli site is 16,387 sq. km.

e) BIRDGHAT

This site is situated near Gorakhpur town very close to Gorakhpur-Lucknow Road Bridge on the left-bank of river Rapti. This is the last flood forecasting station on river Rapti. The gauge data of Bansi and Kakrahi are utilized as base data for formulation of forecast for Birdghat. The site has its own CWC’s Wireless network for the transmission of data to divisional office and other places. The catchment area of river Rapti up to Birdghat (Gorakhpur) is 20,093 sq. km.

River Rohin

TRIMOHANIGHAT

As the name implies, Trimohanighat site represents the confluence of three river of Rohin group. The idea behind the setting up of this site in 1971 was to determine the contribution during the flood of the river Rohin to the River Rapti. The site is situated just down-stream of the road bridge connecting Pharenda (Anand Nagar) with Mahraj Ganj on the right bank of river Rohin. The catchment area of river Rohin up to Trimohinighat is 2,355 sq. kms.

River Burhi Rapti

KAKRAHI

To ascertain the contribution of river Burhi Rapti, a major tributary of river Rapti, Gauge observation at Kakrahi was started in 1971. Subsequently, the site is upgraded as Gauge & Discharge site in Year 2004. The gauge data of the site is used as base data for formulation of forecast at Birdghat. The site is situated just down stream of the confluence of Banganga river with the river Burhi Rapti near Road Bridge on Bansi Naugarh road in Sidharthnagar district. The site is situated on the right- bank of river Burhi Rapti. The catchment area of river Burhi Rapti up to Kakrahi is 4,192 sq. km.

River Kunhra

USKABAZAR

To ascertain the contribution of river Kunhra, a tributary of river Rapti, Gauge site at Uska Bazar on right bank of river Kunhra about 30 metre down¬stream of the Railway bridge on Railway line Uska Bazar- Brijmanganj in district Sidharthnagar is setup in 1971. The catchment area of river Kunhra up to Uskabazar is 2,432 sq. km.

River Kwano

a)Chandradeep Ghat

This is first gauge site on right bank of river Kwano in district Gonda. The catchment area of river Kwano up to Chandradeep ghat is 1,100 sq. kms,

The site situated at Basti town on the left bank of river Kwano. The site is connected by road as well as Railway line, The catchment area of river Kwano up to Basti site is 3,005 sq. kms.

c)Mukhlispur

The site is situated in district Sant Kabir Nagar on left bank of river Kwano, 60 km. down-stream of Basti site. The catchment area of river Kwano up to Mukhlispur is 5,440 sq. km.
